'Dreams' Receives Ippy Award
Dreams to Grow On, a children's book
by Augusta-area writer Christine Hurley Deriso, has been named one of Ten
Outstanding Books of the Year by the Independent Publisher Association.
The Ippy Award was presented to Ms. Deriso and her publisher, John
Thompson of Illumination Arts, during BookExpo America in Los Angeles May
30. The book won the award in the category, Most Inspirational to Youth.
The award includes a $500 cash prize.
The book was selected from more than 1,500 entries submitted by over 900
publishers in North America. Entries came from every state in the country
and six Canadian provinces. All books published by independent publishers
(those not owned by a publicly traded corporation) are eligible for
submission.
Deriso's book, illustrated by New York artist Matthew Archambault,
challenges children to use their imaginations to set their dreams in
motion.
"It was such a thrill to receive the award," said Deriso. "The award
reflects not only the association members' opinions, but the feedback of a
panel of children who were asked which entries they liked best. It's
wonderful to know that the book's message resounds with readers."
Deriso is the publications editor at the Medical College of Georgia and
writes for magazines including Family Circle, Parents, Ladies' Home
Journal and Child. She is a frequent visitor to schools as a guest author.
